When burning rises into the chest, the first thought is usually too much acid. And we’ve all seen the adverts that say just take an antacid to settle it.

For many people, the opposite is true. Those feelings of heartburn and reflux can signal there’s too little acid, not too much. It sounds odd, and it’s one of the patterns I look for most often in clinic. Understanding it is the first step to making sense of your digestion.

What stomach acid does, and why you need it

Stomach acid, or hydrochloric acid, isn’t your enemy. It’s one of the most important fluids that your body makes. A healthy stomach has a strongly acidic environment, with a pH of around 1.5 to 3. That acidity does three essential jobs.

Breaking down protein

Acid switches on an enzyme called pepsin. Think of pepsin as a pair of scissors. It snips the large proteins in meat, fish, or beans into smaller amino acids. Your body uses those to build muscle, hormones, and brain chemicals.

Pepsin only works in an acidic setting. Without enough acid, protein isn’t broken down properly. That’s part of why a heavy, protein-rich meal can leave your tummy feeling uncomfortable.

Unlocking nutrients

Many nutrients are bound tightly within your food. Acid acts like a key that frees its minerals and vitamins so you can absorb them further along. It also matters for releasing vitamin B12 from protein, and for absorbing iron, calcium, and magnesium.

Acid also helps to convert iron into the form your gut takes up more easily. So you could eat well and still miss out on nutrients if your acid is low.

Your stomach is part of your immune defence. A low pH neutralises many of the bacteria, viruses, and parasites that you swallow each day. This acid barrier also helps to protect the more delicate community of microbes further down. If it weakens, that protection drops.

The pressure can push the valve at the top of the stomach open. Even the small amount of acid that’s present can then splash up, causing that familiar burning.

Because low acid affects how well you absorb nutrients, other signs can appear too. Your nails may become weak or brittle. Or, your hair may start to thin. That fatigue that just won’t lift can point to low iron or B12. Even skin problems can trace back to how well your stomach is working.

Why stomach acid runs low

Understanding the signs helps. The real key is to ask why acid production drops in the first place. A few common factors stand out.

A frequent cause is Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that can live in the lining of your stomach. To survive the acid, it can suppress acid production. Over time, a long-standing infection can inflame and thin the lining, a change called atrophic gastritis, which lowers acid further. The effect can be marked.

In one study, people with H. pylori-related low acid saw their acid output rise sharply once the infection was cleared.

Long-term use of acid-reducing medication is another factor. Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are prescribed widely and can be necessary. Used over long periods, they can leave your acid very low.

Researchers have linked extended PPI use with lower levels of B12, iron, calcium, and magnesium. The reason is simple: less acid means less of the processing that mineral absorption depends on. If you’ve been on them for a long time, it’s worth raising with your GP.

Low zinc can play a part too, in a frustrating loop. Zinc is involved in making stomach acid. If you’re low in zinc, you may make less acid. Low acid then makes zinc harder to absorb, which can deepen the shortfall.

Finally, a period of ongoing stress is a powerful contributor. It can switch off the signals that tell your stomach to get to work.

The stress connection: you can't rest and digest on high alert

Your body runs on an autonomic nervous system with two modes. One is fight or flight. The other is rest and digest.

Fight or flight is driven by the sympathetic nervous system, and it’s built for survival. When you’re under pressure, your body assumes there’s danger. It sends blood and energy to your muscles and brain. Digestion drops down the list of priorities.

Rest and digest is the opposite. It’s run by the parasympathetic nervous system, and it switches on when you feel safe. It lowers your heart rate and tells your gut to get moving. The trouble is modern life. Many of us stay in a low-grade fight-or-flight state for much of the day. Rushed meals, eating at a desk, or feeling on edge all send the wrong message. Your body never quite hears that it’s safe to digest.

Researchers have shown how strong this link is. In one classic study, simply thinking and talking about appetising food raised acid output several times over.

That’s why creating a calm space to eat can be one of the most useful things you do.

How low acid ripples through the body

A problem that starts in the stomach rarely stays in the stomach. Because digestion is a chain of steps, low acid has effects that are felt further along.

Nutrient shortfalls

The most direct result is that you absorb less. Over time, this can lead to specific gaps. Low iron can cause anaemia, with fatigue, weakness, and pale skin. Low B12 can bring deep tiredness, tingling in the hands and feet, and foggy thinking. Low calcium and magnesium can affect your bones, muscles, and mood.

Bacterial overgrowth

The acid barrier is the guardian of your gut community. When it weakens, microbes can travel up into the small intestine, which is meant to stay relatively clean. This can lead to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO. Researchers have found a clear link. A 2025 review of 29 studies found that acid-reducing medication raised the risk of SIBO. Longer use raised it further.

These overgrown populations of bacteria are far from harmless. They ferment the carbohydrates you eat and produce gas, which brings bloating and discomfort. They also compete with you for your nutrients. That can deepen any existing shortfalls and keep the cycle going.

Supportive habits for better digestion

Restoring healthy digestion isn’t a quick fix. It’s about creating the right conditions for your body to work well. That starts with a few simple, foundational habits.

Make mealtimes calmer

Digestion begins before your first bite. The sight, smell, and thought of food trigger what’s called the cephalic phase. Your brain sends signals down the vagus nerve, and your stomach starts to prepare acid.

You can support this process. Sit at a table, away from screens. Take three slow breaths before you begin. This helps to move you out of fight or flight and into rest and digest. Then chew thoroughly. Chewing is the first step of digestion, and it tells the rest of the system to get ready. Ginger, Zingiber officinale, is warming and stimulating for digestion. It’s a traditional carminative, which means it helps to relieve wind and bloating. It also helps your stomach to empty. Functional dyspepsia is ongoing indigestion with no clear structural cause.

In a randomised trial in people with this pattern, ginger sped up stomach emptying compared with a placebo. That can help if food seems to linger too long after meals.

When to take extra care

These food and lifestyle steps are gentle, supportive, and foundational. They’re not a substitute for medical advice. If you have digestive problems that are persistent or severe, see your doctor to rule out underlying causes such as an H. pylori infection.

Most of the herbs here are gentle, everyday plants. The real caution is if you’re on prescription medication or pregnant. In that case, it’s worth checking with a herbalist who knows your case. Medical herbalists are trained to know when herbs can be used safely alongside prescription medicines.
