When there’s a genuine threat, like an injury or infection, your immune system sounds the alarm and sends inflammatory signals to deal with the problem. This is perfectly normal and helpful. However, sometimes this alarm system gets stuck in the “on” position, creating chronic inflammation that damages healthy tissue, particularly in your joints.

Curcumin works by targeting what scientists call the “master switch” of inflammation, a protein complex called NF-κB. Imagine this as the central control panel for your body’s inflammatory response. Both turmeric (or curcumin) and boswellia are what scientists call “lipophilic”, meaning they dissolve in fats but not in water. Since your digestive system is largely water-based, these compounds have trouble dissolving and getting into your bloodstream. It’s like trying to mix oil and water, they just don’t want to combine.

To make matters worse, even if some of these compounds do get absorbed, your liver may quickly break them down and eliminate them from your body. This means that taking basic turmeric powder or standard boswellia extract may result in very little active compound actually reaching your joints where it’s needed.

This is why early research on these compounds sometimes showed disappointing results even though they work in traditional use. The products that were produced were not in a form that could be easily assimilated by the body.

More recent formulation of supplements has solved this problem through some clever innovations. The successful studies, including the 2025 spondylitis trial, used advanced delivery systems that dramatically improve absorption.

Some formulations combine the active compounds with natural oils, similar to how turmeric might be combined with fat in traditional remedies. If you’re taking any medications, especially blood thinners or diabetes drugs, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting these supplements.
